Jim Haynes to be VSCCA Honored Guest at Lime Rock Park

Jim Haynes will be the VSCCA’s honored guest at their Lime Rock Park “Fall Finale” vintage races this October 5–6, where a Formula Junior Reunion will be featured.

A graduate engineer of Yale University, Jim entered racing in 1956 with a MGTD. In 1959 he became the SCCA National Champion in Formula III, and in 1963 became the National Champion in Formula Junior. In 1964 Jim purchased a controlling interest in Lime Rock Park and rescued it from near bankruptcy. In 1983 he started Lime Rock’s annual Vintage Fall Festival, and continued as their General Manager/Race Promoter until 1986, when he became the Vice President of Special Projects for the SCCA. In 1988 he took over as the CEO and General Manager of the Road America Race Track, helping them out of financial problems. He also helped popularized vintage racing by arranging for many vintage support races at major North American car races.

Jim will be the featured speaker at the VSCCA’s Friday evening dinner on race weekend at the nearby White Hart Inn. His favorite car was the Fitch–Whitmore Special that he raced for 13 years, never putting a ding in it, and he was never defeated in class with it.

This is a closed club event, but for this race a special invitation is being extended to all Formula Junior race cars up through 1963, with drivers who are members of other vintage racing organizations. The VSCCA is seeking to locate other original Formula Junior racers to join them in the FJ reunion.....Bill Gelles
