At the MG Vintage Racers’ first ever “West Coast” Focus Event, with HMSA at Laguna Seca Raceway in March, MG racer Jim Weissenborn was voted to receive the prestigious “MGVR Spirit Award,” also know as “The Big Copper Bucket.” It was first awarded by MGVR in 1996. It is annually presented to a MG racer voted by their peers as best representing the “Spirit of MG Vintage Racing” – whatever they feel that is – at the Focus Event. Jim can now add his name to the honorary list of the past 12 winners inscribed on the big bucket.
Jim’s MG roots go deep. In 1949 he went with his dad in an MGTC to witness MGs in competition at Bridgehampton, and got hooked. He returned there in 1960 to take a SCCA drivers school, and then competed with his MGA, and other sports cars, in many races up through 1964 – Thompson, Marlboro, Watkins Glen, etc. Years passed for family and business priorities, and then he brought out the very same MGA, now to compete in vintage racing, and has been a very strong supporter of MGVR, plus racing his MG around the country. In receiving the award, Jim commented: “What an honor to receive the MGVR Spirit Award. The First MGVR West Coast Focus Event was a dream come true for us old guys! Thanks to all the MGVR folks who have made the past years so much FUN!”
MGVR’s “East Coast” Focus Event for 2008, will be with VRG this September at the new “New Jersey Motorsports Park” near Atlantic City. MGVR on the web at: www.MGVR.org
