Gianclaudio “Clay” Regazzoni – 1939–2006

Former Swiss F1 driver, Gianclaudio “Clay” Regazzoni died as a result of a road accident on December 15, 2006. Driving for Williams, McLaren, BRM (teamed with F1 champion, Niki Lauda) and Ferrari, Regazzoni amassed five wins during his 11–year, 132 F1 race career. His best year was 1974, losing the championship to Emerson Fittipaldi by only three points.

Unfortunately, his racing career was unfortunately cut short when he suffered spinal damage in a crash at the 1980 United States Grand Prix in Long Beach, California. Paralyzed from the waist down, he fought back to eventually returned to racing utilizing hand–controlled vehicles–––mostly rallies.

Regazzoni not only lived his life to its fullest, but fought on the front lines helping disabled people get equal opportunities in life and society. He will be missed......Walter Pietrowicz
